Check Your Style is a free educational tool. It explains rules of writing, lets you practice them, and checks a draft for common habits those rules warn about. It is a study aid, not a teacher, an editor, or a grading service.
The checker finds patterns, such as likely passive voice, filler phrases, and possible comma splices. It can miss real problems and can flag writing that is perfectly correct. Treat every mark as a question to consider, not a rule you must follow. You are responsible for the final judgment on your own writing.
The site is free for personal and educational use, including by students, parents, teachers, and schools. You may link to it and use it in class.
The rules of usage and composition are drawn from William Strunk Jr.'s The Elements of Style (1918), which is in the public domain. All explanations, examples, quizzes, and code on this site were written fresh and are the property of the site's operator. You may not copy the site's original text and code wholesale to republish as your own, though quoting a rule with credit is welcome.
The site is provided "as is," without warranty of any kind. We do not promise it will be accurate, available at all times, or free of errors. Your grade, your submission, and your writing remain your responsibility.
